May 2017

Dear Wakefield Township Resident and/or Taxpayer:

On behalf of the Wakefield Township Board, it is my pleasure to announce Spring Cleanup 2017. Our Board sees great value in providing our residents an avenue to clean up their properties and their neighborhoods at no cost to them. The City of Wakefield has teamed up with us this year and we will be holding a cleanup for both communities on the same day.  This joint effort has also resulted in us receiving a competitive grant from the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality to cleanup automobile and pickup tires.  If you have scrap car tires (without rims) this is your chance to get rid of them at no charge. You can bring up to 10 tires per trip.  A service charge of $5 will apply to tires with rims.

This year we again will have our cleanup over two days, Friday, May 19 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 pm and Saturday, May 20 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 NOON. This program is for Wakefield Township and City of Wakefield residents and taxpayers (no businesses please).  Please provide proof that you are a resident by providing a driver license or tax statement.   The attendants will be checking you in and directing you to the dumpsters at Western U.P. Recycling, located on Planter Road/Chippewa Drive, just off N. County 519. We appreciate Western U.P. Recycling’s role in helping us expand this cleanup and allowing us to use their facility free of charge.

Couches, wood furniture, plastic items, appliances, TV’s, building materials, and anything not made of steel should be placed in the dumpsters that are provided.  Car batteries and small piles of steel and other metals can be placed on the trailer or in the designated area near the dumpsters.

Western U.P. Recycling has been contracted to remove any large steel items from the township residences.  Contact them directly at 229-5150.  They will use a skidder to remove cars or trucks which are inaccessible to the road area.  From there, they will be picked up with a truck.  This service is available in the spring, summer and fall and to some degree in the winter.

This is the tenth year of our cleanup for Wakefield Township, and thanks to our responsible residents, our efforts are paying off in making our properties look better and free of junk. I would like to thank the township residents in advance for doing their part in making this a successful cleanup again this year.

Lastly, each year we are finding more junk and refuse being dumped on public roadsides and private property.  There is no excuse for this since the City and Township are providing an annual free cleanup.   If you see someone dumping, do not confront them, but please call 911 with as much information as you can give them-pictures are really helpful.  The Township fully intends to prosecute anyone found guilty of such an act under our ordinances, and will also report them to the MDEQ and the MDNR for further prosecution if warranted.

Sincerely,

John Cox, Wakefield Township Supervisor
