Garbage Pickup Info

February 2017

Dear Wakefield Township Resident:

As you may have read in the newspaper, the Township Board recently approved a three-year contract with the Gogebic Range Solid Waste Authority. We made this change based on the following reasons:

  1. GRSWA was the low bidder at $14.35 per month with no increases for the three-year contract. This compares to Waste Management at $21.73 per month 17-18; $22.38 18-19; and $23.05 for 19-20. When we looked back at 2010, the low bid from Waste Management was $1 1.70 and increased 2%-3% per year until today’s rate of $14.23 per month. As you know the customer pays $8 and the township general fund pays the rest. With these increases over the last 7 years the township must raise the fee to $10.00 per month for 2-33 gallon cans or 4-30-gallon customer supplied bags. The township will continue to assist township residents by paying the remaining $4.35 out of the township general fund. Your $10 contribution will not be raised for the next 3 years.
  2. Local residents are employed by GRSWA.
  3. Local contact to start/stop service —Call 906-932-0600 if you have questions or problems with the service. If you currently are a customer you do not need to call them—do nothing, we have transferred your account. If you currently are not a customer please call the number above.
  4. Spring cleanup is included and will not cost the township any extra dollars, unless we use more than four full dumpsters.

The Board realized that most of you have been very satisfied with the service from Waste Management. GRSWA has promised to do as well as Waste Management and that is outlined in the legal contract that they have with the township.

Remember that the new rate will be $10 per month from the current $8 which has been in effect since 2010. The new contract will take effect on April 1, 2017. You will be getting a bill from GRSWA on or about March 23, 2017. You will be able to pay by check, credit card or if you prefer, in person, at the Gogebic County Transfer Station Office, E5917 US-2, Ironwood, Michigan 49938.

In December, you received a bill from Waste Management that was incorrect. If you paid more than $24.00, you will be getting a refund check from them. Let the township know if you did not get a refund.

The garbage pickup day will remain on Mondays and their first pickup will be on April 3, 2017. Until the route times are established, please have your garbage out by 9:00 a.m. It will be picked up by 6:00 p.m. After a few weeks as the routes are established, you will be able to determine the approximate time that they will do your pickup.

Typically, spring weight restrictions go on about March 15th. Since Waste

Management will be our contractor until April l, those residents on roads that have had to bring their garbage to a non-restricted road will continue to do so as in the past. After April 1, the affected areas will be picked up with a pickup truck from GRSWA.

Attached to this letter is the Holiday delay schedule for Holidays on Mondays. We will also have this information in our newsletter, on our website  and with your bill, which will be mailed directly from GRS WA..

If you have questions about this call Clerk Mandy Lake at 906-364-0669 or Supervisor John Cox at 906-224-3721.
